Description
Water tanks for fire protection are ubiquitous in high rise buildings and other facilities. These tanks require ITM in accordance with NFPA 25, Standard for the Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance (ITM) of Water-Based Fire Protection Systems, but unfortunately they are often overlooked. This unique presentation will include the results of a comprehensive review of all Huntington Beach high rise buildings’ water tanks from both an AHJ’s and a tester’s perspectives. Fire Marshal Van Mullem will also include an overview of the requirements found in NFPA 22, Water Storage Tanks, the various types of tanks in use, and the applicable provisions for ITM found in NFPA 25. Mr. Moses will share his experiences in conducting numerous dive inspections on these tanks in California, including interesting and head-scratching findings that should pique everyone’s interest.
Biography
Janice Van Mullem is with the Huntington Beach Fire Dept., where she has held the positions of Hazardous Materials Program Specialist, Assistant Fire Marshal, and now, Fire Marshal. She also serves as Second Vice President of the Southern California Fire Prevention Officers. Janice received her Bachelor’s in Electrical Engineering and two Master’s Degrees in Science Technology and Public Policy, and Civil / Environmental Engineering. Prior to the fire service she worked many years in the environmental field specializing in hazardous materials and hazardous waste management.
Steve Moses has made his living for the last 35 years diving into unusual and dangerous situations throughout the United States. He and his company, Rubicon Applied Divers, have performed work in National Parks, The Great Lakes, The Gulf of Mexico, Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, as well as many rivers and lakes. Since 2014 he has been making a splash exploring long-ignored fire protection supply tanks in California and other states, assisting in bringing them into compliance to NFPA 25.
