Description:

Fire protection engineering has always been impacted by insurance requirements in addition to NFPA standards.  From HPR insurers to loss prevention requirements for self-insured, fire protection engineers must be aware of these requirements as they often exceed building code requirements and NFPA standards.

Here's what’s we’ll cover:

  • What is the role of the fire protection engineer in the insurance industry?
  • Why are some insurers requiring protection other than that specified in the fire and building codes?
  • Why do some carriers insert themselves into the plan review and building construction process?  What is their role?
  • What can an engineering firm do if they disagree with the insurance recommendations?  If the client disagrees?
  • What specific hazards or risks are currently on the radar of major property insurers?
Biography:

Debbie has been a fire protection consultant in the insurance industry for more than 35 years, working on primarily HPR accounts and related construction projects.  For the last 28 years her role on the insurance brokerage side has given her an in-depth understanding of the differences in approaches between code consultants, AHJ’s and the carrier engineers on a wide variety of different topics.  She is a Fellow in the Society of Fire Protection Engineers, Past President of the Southern California Chapter, Vice Chair of SFPE’s Qualifications Committee, Past Chair of NFPA’s Committee on Protection of Cultural Resources, and a licensed insurance broker and CPCU.
